Audit Slams CMS Property Control

An audit finds the agency that keeps track of all of Illinois state property does a poor job.  
Auditor General William Holland's review Thursday shows the Department of Central Management Services' inventory includes only a fraction of what the state controls. The review says the department has made little progress in developing a computerized list.

State Defends Hiring After Madigan Referral

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan

Gov. Pat Quinn's administration says there should be no doubt about the qualifications of a former Metra transit employee hired by the state after a referral by Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.  
Central Management Services spokesman Mike Claffey  says Patrick Ward worked for 25 years in Chicago's personnel department and has a master's degree with an emphasis in labor relations.

Shutdown Worries State Workers, Retirees

The federal government's partial shutdown is worrying some Illinois state workers and retirees.  
That's because recipients of various state health insurance programs need to get documents from the IRS by a late October deadline in order to prove that their dependents should still be eligible to receive coverage.  
The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises Newspapers reports (http://bit.ly/1btoZUS ) the ongoing government shutdown means that the IRS isn't providing the federal transcripts.
