Democrats in the Illinois House Thursday held a hearing over the salary for one of Gov. Bruce Rauner's top aides.

The issue is not that Education Secretary Beth Purvis is being paid $250,000 a year, but where the money is coming from. Rather than the relatively small budget for governor's staff, her salary comes out of the Department of Human Services.

Gaps in the current year's budget mean that the state has stopped paying for its Child Care Assistance Program, and day care providers are worried about more issues in the future.

The program that provides assistance for parents to pay for child care could experience more financial problems if Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's proposals become next year's budget.

Sen. Heather Steans, a Chicago Democrat, says cutting government assistance to day care has negative consequences in other areas.

  Illinois has awarded contracts for computer upgrades intended to screen out people prohibited from carrying concealed weapons under the state's new gun legislation. The State Journal-Register reports on two contracts totaling more than $350,000.

Amy Hickman, a single mother of two in central Illinois' Jacksonville, lives with multiple sclerosis and is wheelchair-bound after a car accident. She relies on her home health aides to get her out of bed every day. 

David and Beverly Pryor of Arcola have a daughter, Mandy, with severe autism. She lives in a CILA, or a community integrated living arrangement, in Charleston. But they want the state to fund more CILAs to help clear a waiting list so other children and adults can have the same opportunity.
